Crowns & Bridges

Crowns & Bridges

Both crowns and most bridges are fixed prosthetic devices. Unlike removable devices such as dentures, which you can take out and clean daily, zirconia crowns and bridges are cemented onto existing teeth or implants, and can only be removed by a dentist.
Dental crowns have long been a solution to restore the look and function of a damaged tooth. These tooth-shaped caps help restore your teeth and improve your smile.

More information

The average crown or bridge should last about 5-7 years. A well done crown or bridge can last longer than 10 years provided that the person has good oral hygiene and comes to the dentist at least twice a year for examinations, cleaning, and follow-up care. Sometimes crowns and bridges do last the lifetime of a patient.

We generally recommend bridges when you lose one or more tooth in its entirety. In contrast, we usually recommend a dental crown for one of the following reasons: Restoring a cracked or fractured tooth. Replacing a large filling.

A crown is a cap that looks like a tooth and is placed over an existing tooth. It can be used to repair a broken tooth. A dental implant is a surgical implant that replaces a missing tooth and has a crown placed on top to look and function like a normal tooth.

If you’re getting a crown for a damaged or decayed tooth, your dental professional will make an impression of your bite. From that model, they will be able to determine the best shape for your new tooth. Often, the model for your bite needs to be sent to a lab where they will create your crown, which can take a few weeks. Some dental offices can make crowns in their offices depending on the material you choose and whether they have the required equipment. If your dental professional has CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Drafting/Computer-Aided Manufacturing) capabilities and you’re capping an existing, damaged tooth, you could get your crown in a single dental visit.
